Report from LouisianaLafayette, LA – A driving rainstorm did not dampen the spirits of 600 people who came to the Lafayette Public Library to tell Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) about their serious concerns over the threats that they believe “ObamaCare” presents to their health care. Sen. Vitter himself was late because of the huge traffic jam around the library. Citizens, some soaking wet, poured into the library, determined that their voices be heard. The parking lot was jammed, and the main auditorium filled quickly, with some people arriving at 1 p.m. for the 4:30 town hall meeting. Even with two overflow rooms set up, a couple hundred people could not get in.

Who's Scaring Whom?A plethora of polls hit the news this morning, showing that the American people are increasingly worried about President Obama's health reform plan, fearing that their health costs will rise and the quality of their care will get worse if the plan goes into effect. The president spent much of his time during his speeches yesterday answering what he described as cynical scare tactics by critics.

Change Vs. SecurityABC News anchor Charlie Gibson shook his head after Wednesday night's broadcast from the White House, frustrated he had not been able to draw out more details from President Obama about the sweeping health reform plan that he is pushing. Gibson, as well as the doctors, patients, businesspeople, and others in the audience, posed some tough questions. But most of the president's answers came from his standard talking points and went unchallenged. He spoke for 45 minutes of the 75 minutes of actual airtime.

Putting Patients FirstSenators Baucus and Kennedy sent a letter to President Obama this week saying their committees plan to vote on comprehensive health reform legislation in early June, which means legislation could be sent to the full Senate for a vote soon afterward. This is an extraordinarily ambitious schedule. The House also expects to send legislation to the floor for a vote this summer, with hopes for final action on a conference agreement in the fall.

Sign the PetitionWould the health reform prescriptions being offered by President Obama and congressional leaders help patients? It seems a fitting question to ask since Mr. Obama has assured Americans they will be able to keep their doctor and their current coverage if they are satisfied and will have even more choices. Our Health Policy Consensus Group took that as a challenge to ask whether the policy prescriptions fit the rhetoric by analyzing the major reform pillars Washington leaders are proposing.

Lessons from Abroad"So many lessons, so little time." That was how Brian Lee Crowley of Canada led off his remarks at our major conference, "Lessons from abroad for health reform in the U.S." on Monday, co-sponsored by the Galen Institute and the International Policy Network in London. The presentations by noted experts from Canada, the U.K., and Europe were splendid and offered a sober warning to U.S. policymakers about embarking on a path toward giving government more power and control over health care and health coverage.

SCHIP, AgainAs expected, the House rushed to pass a bill on Wednesday to continue funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program. At 285 pages, you can be sure it delivers a lot more than money. One example: The bill changes the rules of the game, making it much easier for states like New York to put children from families making up to $84,800 a year on this publicly-funded program.
