Galen Institute Announces Video Contest Winners

June 1, 2009
Alexandria, VA:  The Galen Institute announced today it has selected a video by Don Brookins entitled “Universal Car Care” (Contest PKG) as the First Place winner in its Do No Harm video contest.  The video depicts a customer with government auto-repair insurance who is seeking a brake job for his 1993 automobile, offering an analogy to the challenges consumers would face in a government-run health insurance system.  Mr. Brookins is a retired news photographer and now an independent video photographer from Broomfield, Colorado.

The second place video award winner is “First, Do No Harm,” produced by David Knight, which vividly illustrates the facts about challenges and restrictions that patients in government-controlled health systems face in other countries in accessing medical care for serious illnesses. Mr. Knight owns a video production company in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

The third place prize goes to “Free Market Boyz,” produced by Jarrett Skorup, which uses rap to make the point that markets offer patients the best options for quality medical care. Mr. Skorup is a recent graduate of Grove City College and currently works as a researcher for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland, Michigan.

“We received a number of exceptional video entries that showed creativity, an understanding of the issues, great production skills, and lots of hard work, and selecting three winners was very difficult,” said Grace-Marie Turner, president of the Galen Institute.  “These videos help the American people to see how important it is for policymakers to proceed carefully with a major overhaul of our health system.  We plan to feature the winning videos on our website and to show them in presentations, including to Members of Congress and other policymakers.  We thank everyone who submitted entries and will provide links to all of them on our website.”

All of the entries can be accessed at http://www.youtube.com/groups_videos?name=firstdonoharm.
