More than 10,000 names of people who signed the Galen Institute’s “Do No Harm” petition (www.DoNoHarmPetition.org) are being delivered today to the U.S. Senate in a show of opposition to government control over the health sector. “Support for this petition confirms what every poll shows,” stated Galen Institute President Grace-Marie Turner.  “The public overwhelmingly opposes the efforts of Congress and the Obama administration to dramatically expand government control over health care.  Political leaders need to listen to the American people, take a step back, and carefully consider proposals that will make health insurance coverage more affordable and improve quality.”

Galen Institute and the Hudson Institute cordially invite you to a discussion on "Politicians, Public Options, and Patients: What the Canadian Experience Teaches Us About Political Control of Health Care." The health reform debate in the U.S. is moving toward proposals that would put more and more health care and coverage decisions under government control. To discuss how this plays out in reality, Brian Lee Crowley, an expert on the Canadian health system, will provide insights into the likely consequences of what the public plan and other measures will mean for the United States.

The Galen Institute today released new survey results showing overwhelming opposition to the individual mandate and other key components of health reform legislation Congress is considering. “These findings illustrate strong opposition to fundamental aspects of the bills moving through Congress,” said Galen Institute President Grace-Marie Turner. “People don’t want to be forced to buy insurance they can’t afford or that might not fit their needs, yet the proposals would slap a tax on them if they don’t.  And people overwhelmingly oppose reducing seniors’ health benefits or raising taxes on the working and middle class in order to expand coverage to some of the uninsured, yet many in Congress continue to push exactly that.”

The Galen Institute today is launching a new website – Health Reform Hub www.HealthReformHub.org – which will serve as a central access point for the latest news and information about market-based ideas for health reform. “The American people are focused as never before on the details of proposals to solve problems facing our health sector,” said Galen Institute President Grace-Marie Turner. “We have created the Health Reform Hub as a one-stop site for access to the latest news and analysis about the reform debate, particularly the patient-centered proposals that have received far too little attention in the current discussion.  Our multi-media site also will provide new ways for people and policymakers to engage in the debate over policies that will dramatically affect the health care choices of every American.”

Rather than focus on the intellectual failures of HR 3200 and the Senate’s bill, let us apply the management guru’s advice: Do not fix fundamentally flawed bills, replace them with sound ones.  What would sound legislation look like?  If one had to select just three fundamentals that Congress needs to get right to extend insurance coverage to all without damaging those portions of American’s health care that are the best in the world, what would they be?
